habitation, dwelling 与 residence 这些词都有“居住处”的意思。

 (1) habitation指长久的或固定的住所或居住地。

• From unpopulated to populated, from nomadism to fixed habitation , it has now become a new farming zone with cattle and goats all over the hillsides.
  从无人到有人，从游牧到定居，如今这里已成了牛羊满山坡的新农业区。
• The signs of human habitation are sparse in the mountain area.
  在这山区中人烟稀少。

 (2) dwelling是正式用词，指人们居住的任何建筑。

• Mary changed her dwelling yesterday.
  玛丽昨天搬了家。
• A native American dwelling commonly had an arched or conical framework overlaid with bark, hides, or mats.
  美洲土著人的住所通常都有用树皮、兽皮或草席覆盖的拱形或圆锥形框架。

 (3) residence指大而豪华的住宅或官邸。

• The handsomely furnished residence is full of fine decorations.
  这座布置得漂漂亮亮的公馆里满是精致的摆设。
• The official residence of the queen is Buckingham Palace.
  女王官邸是白金汉宫。
