(1) happen, occur, take place意思均为“发生”，有时可换用。

• Great changes have happened/taken place/occurred in my hometown in the past few years.
  在过去几年，我的家乡发生了巨大的变化。
• Whatever happens , we must be true to the reform.
  不论发生什么事情，我们必须坚持改革。

 (2) ①happen常带有偶然的意味，多用于客观事件的发生，不用于主观想法的产生。

• An accident happened and many lives were lost.
  发生了一场事故，夺去了许多人的性命。
• I remember the whole thing as if it had happened yesterday.
  我还记得整个事情，就像刚发生在昨天似的。
• Those terrible traffic jams usually happen around Christmas.
  那些严重的交通堵塞通常发生在圣诞节前后。
• Wherever he goes, I'll go, and I don't care what happens .
  不论他去哪里，我都跟着去，我才不管发生什么事呢。
• When did the explosion happen?
  爆炸是什么时候发生的？
• Don't worry, something may happen . There are always ways.
  别担心，或许会发生点出乎意料的事情。总会有办法的。
• It often happens, however, that thinking lags behind reality.
  然而，思想落后于现实的事是常会发生的。

②按计划发生的事多用take place，但间或也有用happen的。

• Owen was away from home when the wedding took place/happened .
  欧文在举行婚礼时离开了家。
• Repetition is not the only thing that should happen in the classroom.
  背诵不是在教室里进行的唯一的事情。
• As it happens, I have brought the paper with me.
  我碰巧把文件带来了。

③happen可接不定式，强调某事的发生带有“偶然，碰巧”的意味。

• If you happen to see John, would you please ask him to phone me?
  万一你看见约翰，请让他给我打电话好吗？
• He happened to be in the office when the telegram was brought in.
  电报送来时，他碰巧正在办公室里。

 (3) ①take place意为“发生，举行，召开，举办”，常用于有组织的活动或按计划发生的事，如会议、婚礼、宴会等。

• In 1919, the May 4th Movement took place in China.
  1919年，中国爆发了五四运动。
• They decided that the ceremony should take place on Thursday.
  他们决定于星期四举行仪式。
• In the U.S.A., elections take place every four years and Congress meets once a year.
  在美国，选举每四年举行一次，而国会每年召开一次。
• The concert takes place next Friday.
  音乐会于下周五举行。
• When will the football match take place ?
  足球比赛何时举行？

②take place也用于其他场合。

• Let me give the story before the curtain goes up. The action takes place in Hainan.
  在开场之前，让我先讲一下这个故事。事件发生在海南。
• The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earth-quakes often take place/occur.
  这些新设计对于经常发生地震的城市应能提供更大的安全保障。
• The accident took place only a block from his home.
  这场事故发生在距他家仅一个街区远的地方。

 (4) ①occur常用于偶然事件、意外事故，如灾祸(火灾、地震)、疾病等的发生，常可与happen换用，有时也可与take place互换。

• He related just how the accident had occurred /happened/taken place.
  他讲述了事故是怎样发生的。
• Disputes sometimes occur between them.
  他们之间有时也发生争执。
• The signs indicated that splits had occurred in the enemy camp.
  种种迹象表明敌人阵营中发生了分裂。
• Frosts often occur in November in this region.
  这个地区通常在11月份发生霜冻。
• I feel awfully sorry that this has occurred/happened .
  发生了这种事情，我感到非常抱歉。
• I hope this won't occur again.
  我希望不再发生这样的事。

②occur也可指有组织的活动的发生。

• On that and succeeding days similar movements occurred in various cities.
  在那一天及随后的几天里，各个城市发生了类似的运动。
• Great popular demonstration occurred in favor of the bill.
  为支持这一议案，爆发了大规模的群众游行。
• The meeting occurred a few weeks after he had arrived from abroad.

③occur，happen 也用于好的方面。

• It's still hopeful that some kind of miracle may occur/happen .
  仍然会有产生某种奇迹的希望。
