have to/have got to 与 must 两者同义,均表示“必须、有义务做某事”,但略有差别。
(1) 一般说来,表示“客观必须”常用have to/have got to;表示“主观上必须做某事”通常用must。
- I have to go to the office by bike every day.
- I must study harder to pass the examination with flying colors.
- You must finish it by next Monday. (有“I want you to...”
- I must stop smoking.
- You've got to go and see the boss. (有“sb. wants you to...”
- Catholics have to go to church on Sundays. (The religion tells them to do so.)
- A: Do your homework.
B: Oh, must I?
- When I was your age, I had to get up at 5 every morning.
- When he comes, I must go.
When he came, I had to go.
- I told him he must make a decision.
③其否定形式:mustn't, don't have to, haven't got to意思差别较大。
- You mustn't tell George. (Don't tell George.)
- You don't have to see George. (You can if you like but it isn't necessary.)
*在英式英语中,往往用needn't代替don't have to和haven't got to。
- You needn't tell George.
- I had to go there at once.
- I shall have to go there at once.
- I have had to stay here.
- Had I to go there, I would go at once.
*have to, have got to, must在肯定、否定、疑问句中的形式:
I have to do this.
Have you to do this? I have not to do this. I had to do this. Had you to do this? I had not to do this. |
I have got to do this.
Have you got to do this? I have not got to do this. I had got to do this. Had you got to do this? I had not got to do this. |
I must do this.
Must you do this? I need not do this.
|
- I don't usually have to work on Sundays.
- Do you often have to speak French in your job?
- How often do you have to travel on business?
- I haven't got to work tomorrow.
- Have you got to do any interpreting next week?
- Did you have to go to church on Sundays when you were a child?
(6) 谈及将来,既可用have/got to,也可用will have to。
I've got to get up early tomorrow — we're going to Beijing. (也可用I'll have to ...)
- What time do you have to be in Boston tomorrow?
- You don't usually have to tell her things twice.
- A: I (have) got to go.
B: Oh, do you? - You (have) just got to help me.
