(1) a holiday通常指短期(如一两天)假期，较长时间的可用holidays。

• We've got a holiday on National Day.
  我们国庆节放假。
• I had to work on Bank holiday Monday.
  星期一是银行公休日，我得上班。
• Where are you going for your summer holidays?
  你打算去哪里过暑假？

＊在像a three week's holiday, on holiday这样的短语中，总是用holiday，而不是复数形式。

 (2) leave主要用于军队、公司、学校等，如sick leave病假。

• I had to ask the manager for half a day's leave . But he refused (to give/grant me leave ).
  我必须向经理请半天假。但他拒绝给我假期。
• They were given two leaves each year.
  他们每年有两次假。
• Will you be taking your leave in Beijing?
  你将在北京休假吗？

 (3) vacation在英式英语中用于指大学的假期、法庭休庭期。在美式英语中vacation表示时间较长的假期，如：on vacation (=on holiday), the summer vacation, the Christmas vacation等。
