(1) improve in意为在某方面做出改进或进步，后可接skill, knowledge, health, behaviour等。

• It seems that the boy has greatly improved in his behaviour since he was warned last.
  看来自从上次对他提出警告以后，这孩子的表现大有好转。
• Mr. Smith is improving gradually in health.
  史密斯先生的健康渐渐有了起色。

 (2) improve on/upon 是“对……加以改进/改良”，意味着在原来基础上做出更好的东西。

• They are training strenuously so as to improve on their previous records.
  他们正努力训练，以期刷新他们以前的纪录。
• I'm unable to improve on his suggestion.
  我提不出比他的更好的建议了。

 (3) improve可用作及物动词，意为“增进，改进，改善”。

• I think you can improve your health by exercise.
  我想你可以通过锻炼来增进健康。
• Don't you think we should do our best to improve ourselves in English?
  你不认为我们应尽力在英语方面提高自己吗？
