(1) ①later用作副词，意为“后来，以后，较晚时候”。

• I knew nothing about it at the time, although I learnt it later .
  虽然我后来获悉此事，可在当时我对此一无所知。
• It did not enter my mind until later that it was a cat.
  直到后来我才想到它是一只猫。
• The Committee consisted at first of nine, later of twelve members.
  该委员会最初有9名成员，后来有12名成员了。
• Later that day we went out together to take a walk in the woods, talking a lot about our future.
  那天晚些时候，我们一起出去到小树林里散步，谈论了很多未来。

②later常和表示时间的词语连用，意为“……之后；过了……”。

• Two months later she went to Europe to further her studies.
  两个月之后，她去欧洲进修去了。

 (2) later on意为“将来，以后，过些时候”，有时也表示“后来，过了些时候”。常可与later换用。

• Later (on) he got a job as technical advisor to the employers.
  后来他搞到一份工作，给雇主们当技术顾问。
• Shall we leave that there and go into it later (on)?
  我们要不要把这事放一放，以后再来研究它？
• I think we'd better thrash this misunderstanding between us later on , not now.
  我想我们最好是以后再来消除我们之间的误解，而不是现在。
