(1) 两者均为little的比较级。less常用于体积(size)、重量(weight)、时间(time)、数量(quantity)；lesser常用于价值(value)和重要性(importance)上。

• Less size means less weight.

• Some young people spend less time at work than at play.
  有些青年花在工作上的时间没有花在玩乐上的时间多。
• As far as I know, he was a lesser writer.
  据我所知，他是个不太重要的作家。

 (2) lesser也可用于区别体积、长度、数目、重量等。如：the lesser circle, the lesser distance, the lesser sum, the lesser weight等。

• Choose the lesser evil.
  两恶相权取其轻。

 (3) less也可用于价值、重要性。

The less in value, the less of its importance.
一件东西其价值越小，其重要性往往也越小。

 (4) less， lesser均可用作副词。

• Eat less , drink less , and sleep more.
  少吃，少喝，多睡。
• It is Simon who complains less .
  西蒙总是很少抱怨。
• The heat has grown less intense.
  热度已大大减弱了。
• Athletes at Georgia University have been treated less as students than as hired hands who could turn a dollar for university.
  运动员在佐治亚大学较少地被当作学生，更多的是被当作受雇来为该大学挣钱的人手。
• Of the two actors, he is the lesser known.
  这两个演员中，他知名度较低。
