limit, confine 与 restrict 这些词都有“限制”、“限定”的意思。

 (1) limit指在时间、空间、数量、程度等方面的限制，且限定到某一个点，如果超出了这个点就会受到惩罚或造成不良后果。

• I have been asked to limit my speech to a maximum of ten minutes.
  我被要求把讲话时间限定在10分钟以内。
• Concerned about her weight, she limits herself to two meals a day.
  由于担心自己的体重，她限制自己一日两餐。
• We must limit the expense to what we can afford.
  我们必须把开销限制在我们能负担得起的范围内。

 (2) confine指使人、物或活动等处在规定的区域内，含有“约束”“束缚”的意思。

• His illness confined him to bed.
  疾病使他卧床不起。
• He had had a long and uncomfortable trip, for he had been confined to the wooden box for over ten hours.
  他经受了一次漫长而又很难受的旅行，因为他憋在木箱里有十多个小时。
• The wild animals are confined in small cages in the zoo.
  野生动物被关在动物园的小笼子里。
• The professor confined his remarks to scientific management.
  那位教授把自己的讲话局限在科学管理方面。

 (3) restrict指把行为、选择等限制在规定范围之内，常与to连用，意为“仅限于……，限制在……”。

• They were restricted the freedom of speech.
  他们被限制了言论的自由。
• Use of the swimming pool is restricted to club members.
  游泳池仅限于俱乐部成员使用。
