(1) live意为“活着，生活”，为不及物动词，但可接同源宾语life。

• He lived a plain and frugal life.
  他过着一种朴素节俭的生活。

 (2) live by指“以(做某事)为生”，后接动名词。

• He lived by selling newspapers.
  他靠卖报为生。

 (3) live off意为“靠……供养；靠……生活；以……为食”。

• These people live off the land.
  这些人依靠种地过活。
• His aunt has come to live off him.
  他姑妈前来投靠他生活。
• Some of the cattlemen of Africa live entirely off the produce of their herds.
  有些非洲牧民完全靠他们的畜牧产品而生。

 (4) live on意为“以……为食；靠……供养”。

• They lived on wild fruits.
  他们靠野果充饥。
• He lived on his brother for two years.
  他依靠他的兄弟生活了两年。
• His family lived on fifty yuan a month.
  他一家靠每月50元生活。
• He has a family of five living entirely on his income/salary/the rent/charity/handouts.
  他有个五口之家，全靠他的收入／薪水／租金／慈善／施舍物生活。

 (5) feed off一个意思是“从……(处)取食”；另一个意思是“以……为食”。

• These little bears feed off the leaves of this special tree.
  这些小熊以这种特殊的树叶为食。
• A whole family can feed off a chicken as big as this!
  像这么大的一只鸡，能喂饱全家人。

 (6) feed on/upon可以表示“喂；以……为食”。

• We feed our pigs on kitchen wastes.
  我们用厨房下脚料喂猪。

 (7) dine off意思是“从……(餐具)取食；以……为食；靠……供养；靠……吃饭”。

• Does the Queen really dine off gold plates?
  女王真的用金盘子吃饭吗？
• I wish I could afford to dine off fresh fish every day.
  我希望我每天都能吃得起鲜鱼。
• You can't dine off your former success for always.
  你不能永远吃老本。

 (8) eat off意为①“从……(餐具)取食”，可与dine off, feed off, eat out of换用；②“吃……一部分(当饭)”；③“靠……供养”。

• We can all eat off this large chicken for three days.
  这只鸡个头大，我们全部人吃也能吃上三天。
• He's been eating off/dining off/living off/living on his aunt for nearly a year.
  他靠姑妈供养快一年了。
