(1) make as if意为“仿佛(要)……的样子”，可接不定式或从句。

• He made as if he hadn't seen me.
  他仿佛没有看见我。
• He made as if to throw the ball, then took a jump shot instead.
  他做出仿佛要传球的样子，却跳起投篮。

 (2) make a pretence of意为“假装……的样子”，后接动名词或动名词短语。

• I didn't like the food at all, but had to make a pretence of eating some of it just to please/flatter the hostess.
  我根本不喜欢这些食物，但不得不装作吃一些，只是为了让女主人高兴一下／恭维一下女主人。
• He made a pretence of looking for the book, but actually he wasn't really looking at all.
  他装作找那本书，但其实并没有真正在找。
