(1) make fun of, poke fun at意为“取笑；开……的玩笑”，与jeer at, jest at, laugh at意思相近。

• Because he stammered slightly, the other boys made fun of him.

• He was constantly being poked fun at at school because of his West accent.
  由于他的西部口音，他在学校里经常被人取笑。
• The crowd jeered at the politician when he promised full employment and low prices，as they knew that he could not possibly fulfill this.

 (2) make mock/sport of是“嘲笑、讥笑、取笑(某人或某事)”。

• They made sport of his attempt to start a conversation with one of the girls.

 (3) make game of (sb./sth.)意为“取笑，嘲笑”，用于英式英语。

 (4) make a mockery/travesty of意为“嘲弄”。

• Buying votes makes a mockery of free elections.
  买选票是对自由选举的嘲弄。
• Here was the man making a mockery/travesty of honesty and fair play.

• They made a mockery of him for his pretending to intelligence he didn't, in fact, possess.

 (5) be a mockery of意为“是对……的嘲弄”。
