区别辨析 manage to do, succeed in doing, attempt to do, try to do, was/were able to do 与 (be) capable of

 (1) ①manage to do是“设法做到,成功做到”,用于表示经过努力或设法才能做到的场合,这时,可与succeed in doing换用。

  • managed to get/succeeded in getting there before dark in spite of the rain.
    尽管下雨,我还是设法在天黑前赶到了那里。
  • Finally I managed to bring my intention home to him.
    我终于使他认识到我的意图。

②manage to do, succeed in doing用在疑问句、否定句、条件句或带虚拟的句子中,表示“设法或尝试(做某事)”,但不一定成功。

  • Do you suppose you can manage to get/succeed in getting me a passport?
    你以为你能为我搞到护照吗?
  • If I succeed in finding /can manage to find work soon, things will be easier for my family.
    如果我不久就能找到工作,我家的事情就好办了。

 (2) attempt to do sth.表示“试做,尝试,企图做某事”,但不一定成功。

  • The prisoners attempted to escape (or: attempted an escape) but failed.
    犯人试图逃跑但没成功。
  • She attempted to go on with her work in the house. But she could not.
    她试图继续在屋里做她的事,但她做不下去。

 (3) try to do 是“试图做(某事)”,但不一定成功。

  • I tried to persuade him, but failed (or: but in vain).
    我试图说服他,但没能办到。
  • I tried to keep things going by a little teaching.
    我试图通过教一点课度日。

 (4) ①was/were able to do用在肯定句中,表示“过去某次成功地做到某事”,这时可与managed to do和succeeded in doing互换,但不能用could。

  • was able to catch what he said.
    我听懂了他的话。
  • How many eggs were you able to get?
    你能搞到多少鸡蛋?
  • After six hours' climbing, we succeeded in reaching/were able to reach the top of the mountain.
    经过六个小时的攀登,我们到达了山顶。

②was/were able to do也可用于表示“一般(而不是具体某一次)的能力”,这时可与could互换。

  • She could/was able to sing like an angel when she was a kid.
    她还是小孩子时,就唱歌动听得像个天使。

 (5) ①(be) capable of表示“能够/有能力/有可能做某事”,多用于人,通常接动名词。

  • It was felt that she was perfectly capable of winning the championship in this event.
    人们感到她完全能够赢得这个项目的冠军。
  • Do you feel capable of swimming across the English Channel?
    你觉得你能游过英吉利海峡吗?

②(be) capable of又表示“有可能,会(做出某种不好之事)”,用于人,可接名词、动名词。

  • I know myself to be raw, quite capable of making mistakes through my lack of experience.
    我知道自己是生手,很有可能因为缺乏经验而出错。
  • Do you think he is capable of anything infamous or base?
    你认为他可能干出什么可耻的事吗?
  • Do you think he is capable of such a thing as deceiving me?
    你认为他可能做出欺骗我的事吗?

③用于事物时,(be) capable of可表示“能,可能会(被)”。

  • An electronic computer is capable of storing millions of bits of information and doing millions of calculations per second.
    一台电子计算机能储存数百万条信息,每秒进行几百万次运算。
  • Your remark is capable of misunderstanding/being misunderstood.
    你的话可能会被误解。
