(1) ①“以……的名字命名”，美国人多用name for，英国人多用name after。

• The machine is named after its inventor.
  这机器以它的发明者命名。
• Henry Adams was named for his uncle Henry William Adams.
  亨利·亚当斯是以他的叔叔亨利·威廉·亚当斯的名字命名的。

②有时也用name from。

• Virginia was named from England's queen.
  弗吉尼亚是以英国女王的名字来命名的。

 (2) name for还可用来表示：

①“(为某事)定日子”。

• Has the day been named for her wedding？
  她结婚的日子定下来了吗？

②“(被)提名为……；任命为”。

• George has been named for Chairman of the Advisory Committee.
  乔治被任命为顾问委员会主席。

③这时，也可用name...as...，其中as可以省略。有时也用name...to...，介词to后接表示职位的词。

• They have named Mr. Li (as ) chairman of the committee.
  他们任命李先生为该委员会主席。
• Although Jim had come first, his competitor was named as the winner, as Jim started before he should have done.
  虽然吉姆得到了第一，但他的竞争对手被定为获胜者，因为吉姆起跑时抢先了。
• Mr. Li has been named to the chairmanship of the committee.
  李先生被提名为该委员会的主席。
