(1) ①“以……的名字命名”,美国人多用name for,英国人多用name after。
- The machine is named after its inventor.
这机器以它的发明者命名。 - Henry Adams was named for his uncle Henry William Adams.
亨利·亚当斯是以他的叔叔亨利·威廉·亚当斯的名字命名的。
②有时也用name from。
- Virginia was named from England's queen.
弗吉尼亚是以英国女王的名字来命名的。
(2) name for还可用来表示:
①“(为某事)定日子”。
- Has the day been named for her wedding?
她结婚的日子定下来了吗?
②“(被)提名为……;任命为”。
- George has been named for Chairman of the Advisory Committee.
乔治被任命为顾问委员会主席。
③这时,也可用name...as...,其中as可以省略。有时也用name...to...,介词to后接表示职位的词。
- They have named Mr. Li (as ) chairman of the committee.
他们任命李先生为该委员会主席。 - Although Jim had come first, his competitor was named as the winner, as Jim started before he should have done.
