区别辨析 praise, applaud, commend 与 recommend

(1) praise意为“赞扬,称赞,吹捧”,后接称赞对象,接for引出称赞原因。

  • People praised him for what he had achieved in this field.
    人们就他在这个领域取得的成就而称赞他。
  • His followers praised him up to the skies.
    他的追随者把他吹捧到天上去。

 (2) applaud意为“鼓掌欢迎,欢呼”,转义为“称赞”。

  • The audience warmly applauded the performers for their excellent acting.
    观众对演员们的精彩表演报以热烈掌声。
  • They applauded him for his being ready to take up the cudgels for a just cause.
    人们称赞他见义勇为。

 (3) ①commend意为“称赞,赞扬”。

  • Our new product has been very highly commended by the customers.
    顾客高度称赞我们的新产品。
  • The manager commended him for his cool head in emergency.
    经理称赞他遇事不慌。

②commend又作“推荐,给……说好话”解,有时可与recommend互换。

  • He's a very promising young man, whom I should like to commend/recommend to you/to your notice.
    他是一个有前途的年轻人,我想把他推荐给你。

 (4) ①recommend作“推荐,建议”解。

  • I can recommend Jim without reservation for the post he is seeking.
    我可以毫无保留地推荐吉姆担任他所谋求的职务。

②recommend常可组成短语如:recommend for(推荐……作某种用途或做某种工作等);recommend to(向……推荐;使得到……的好感)。

  • A new man will be joining the project next October. He's been strongly recommended to us by the head of our Beijing office.
    一个新手将于明年10月加入这一项目。北京办事处的负责人向我们强烈推荐他。
  • The boy's consideration for others recommended him to the group.
    这男孩为别人的周到考虑使他赢得小组的好感。
