(1) rarely表示“少有地，很少，稀罕地”；seldom也表示“很少，不常”；not (very) often则常用于口语。

• During my university days, I rarely/seldom went anywhere except to the library.

• Horse carriages are rarely seen nowadays because cars are popular.
  由于汽车的普及，现在很少见到马车。
• Barking dogs seldom bites.
  〈谚〉会叫的狗不咬人。
• I have been very busy; I seldom get a chance to read.
  我一直很忙，很少有机会看书。

 (2) rarely和seldom均含否定意味，置于句首时，句子需要倒装。

• Rarely does the temperature go above 0℃ in the area this winter.
  今年冬天，这个地区气温很少升到0摄氏度以上。
• Seldom does he go to such places.
  他很少去这样的地方。

 (3) ①not (very) often表示“很少，不常”；常用于口语。

• A: How often do you go there?
  你多长时间去一次那里？
  B: Oh, not (very) often , once a month.
  哦，不(大)常去，一月一次。

②not (very) often有时可作表语。

• It's not (very) often that he comes to my house.
  他不常来我家。
