区别辨析 rather 与 fairly

(1) ①rather表示“有些,相当”,修饰形容词或副词,含有“过了头”的意思。

  • “This soup is rather hot” implies that it is a little too hot for the speaker.
    “这汤有些热”意味着汤对说话的人来说有点太热。
  • I think that would be a rather nice excuse.
    我想那是一个相当好的借口。
  • I think you're rather unkind not to come to the party.
    我想你不来参加聚会,是有些不仗义。

②rather可用来修饰动词或分词,意思是“有点儿;在某种程度上”。

  • rather think/guess/expect that he will not come to join us.
    我在某种程度上认为/猜想/预计他不会来加入我们。
  • We were all rather tired when we reached the top of the mountain.
    我们到达山顶时,都有些累了。

 (2) fairly表示“相当地,适度地”,修饰形容词、副词,通常用于褒义。

  • That is a fairly easy book and is, therefore, perhaps suitable for the purpose.
    这本书浅显易懂,故可能适用。
  • This is a rather easy book. (=It is rather too easy and, therefore, perhaps unsuitable.)
    这本书过于浅显(故可能不适用)。

 (3) rather可用于比较级,可以修饰too, 而fairly则不能。

  • That house is rather larger than he wants.
    那所房子比他想要的大了些。
  • You've done it rather better than I had expected.
    这件事你做得比我预想的还要好得多。
  • This book is rather too easy for the senior and rather too difficult for the junior.
    这本书对高年级学生太容易,对低年级的又太难。
