(1) session指法庭之开庭，议会之会期；也可指为其他目的所举行的单独而无中断的集会。在美国，也指大学之学期或一段上课时间，也可是一系列集会(conference)中的一次。

• The first session of the Conference of Paris was held on Jan. 18th, 1919.
  巴黎会议的第一次会议于1919年1月18日召开。
• It was agreed that the press should be admitted to the “Plenary Sessions” .
  一致同意，新闻记者应被允许出席“全体会议”。
• The House of Commons began its sessions yesterday.
  下议院会期昨天开始了。
• This year's session of Congress was unusually long.
  国会今年的会期特别的长。
• The judge will give/deliver his summing-up at tomorrow's court session , explaining what the evidence has shown.
  在明天开庭时，法官将给出结论，说明证据显示的情况。
• Our school has two sessions , one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
  我们学校有两段上课时间安排，一段在上午，一段在下午。
• We urge you to enroll for the spring session now.
  我们要求你报名参加春季班的学习。

 (2) ①conference是“会议”，有时也可指“小型会谈，磋商，谈判”；用作“会议”解时，一般指比较大型、正式的会议，如国际会议。

• You can't see the manager just now, he is in conference .
  现在你无法见到经理，他正在开会。
• The teacher had a conference with each student during the term.
  老师在本学期与每位学生都谈过话。
• Many international conferences have been held in Geneva.
  许多国际会议都曾在日内瓦召开。

②此外还可说：a peace conference(和平会议)，an annual conference(年会)，a joint conference(联席会)，a summit conference(峰会)，a roundtable conference (圆桌会议)，a press conference(记者招待会)，an emergency conference(紧急会议)。

 (3) congress指学术团体等的代表会议、讨论会，也指为讨论某些重大问题而由各地、各方面代表参加的会议，如我国的人民代表大会；Congress大写时多指美国国会；有时也指聚会、一群人。

• An international congress of geophysicists was held last year.
  去年召开了地球物理学家的国际会议。
• The U.S. Congress handles over 200 bills a session.
  美国国会一个会期要处理两百多个议案。
• A congress of heart specialists is meeting in Chicago soon.
  一群心脏病专家不久就要在芝加哥聚会。

 (4) ①convention指社团、政党等为某一特殊目的(如选举候选人)而召开的大会；或商界会议；年会等。

• The convention voted on a new constitution.
  这次大会投票表决了一部新宪法。
• The Republican presidential candidate will be chosen at the national convention .
  在这次全国性的大会上将选出共和党的总统候选人。

②convention也指“(国家或君主间)的协定”(不如treaty正式)，如the Geneva Conventions 《日内瓦公约》。

③convention也可指公认的标准、惯例、常规或习俗。

• When men wore hats, convention required them to raise them when they met a woman they knew.
  当男人遇到他们认识的妇女时，他们如果戴着帽子，按照习俗要举帽致敬。
• It is silly to be slave to convention .
  做传统习俗的奴隶是愚蠢的。

 (5) meeting指“会议，集会”，可指各种规模大小的会议，是普通用词。

• We teachers have a meeting every other week.
  我们老师每隔一周聚会一次。
• He was not present at the meeting yesterday because he was ill.
  他由于生病而没有出席昨天的会议。

 (6) rally意为“会，集会”，指群众性的大型集会。

• Representatives from all walks of life spoke at the peace rally .
  各行各业的代表在这次和平集会上发了言。

 (7) ①assembly也指“大会，群众性的集会”，尤其是立法者的会议，如the Legislative Assembly(立法会议)。

• In some countries the right of assembly in public is not allowed for everybody.
  在一些国家，并不是每个人都有在公共场所集会的权利。
• The assembly of environmentalists discussed the problem on how to deal with the worldwide pollution.
  这次环境保护者大会讨论了如何应对世界范围的污染问题。

②有时assembly也指“集合(如学校师生)”。

• The morning assembly at our school is at 9 o'clock.
  我们学校在9点举行早会。
