(1) ①slim“苗条,细长,纤细”,指人虽瘦却匀称、好看。
- She eats very little and takes exercise every day in order to keep slim .

(2) ①slender可表示“细长,纤细,修长”,指人时意思是“纤巧,轻盈,苗条”,与slim接近。

她身材苗条,曾是一位模特。
②slender还作“薄薄的”解。
- That novel is a slender book of only 100 pages.

③slender用于希望、可能性、收入、收获等时,表示“很小,渺茫”。
- He has only the slenderest chance/hope of success in the experiment.

(3) slight除表示“微小的,轻微的,少量的”外,也作“苗条,纤小,瘦小”解。

(4) ①thin的意思是“薄,纤细,细弱;稀疏,薄”。
- I tied the box up with a thin string.
我用一条细绳把盒子捆起来。 - She answered shyly in a small thin voice.
她用小而细的声音羞怯地回答了。 - A thin audience watched the game.
观看比赛的人很少。
②thin用于人时,意思是“瘦的”,一般由疾病或营养不良所致。
- He was rather thin after his recent illness.
他最近生了这场病之后变得相当瘦。
③thin指借口、理由、伪装等时,意思是“缺少说服力的,容易被看破的”。
- Your excuse for not attending the meeting was very thin .
你未参加会议的理由非常站不住脚。
(5) lean指人或动物时,意思是“瘦的”,指肉时表示“脂肪少的或无脂肪的”。
- He was a lean and brown old man.
他是个又黑又瘦的老人。 - I prefer fatty meat to lean meat, though the latter is healthier for men.
比起瘦肉来我更爱吃肥肉,虽然前者更利于健康。
