(1) ①space指一切物体存在和运动的“宇宙空间、太空”，不指实体。

• The universe exists in space .
  宇宙存在于太空之间。
• Travel through space to other planets interests many people today.
  现在，穿越外层空间到其他行星去的想法吸引了许多人。

②space可作“间隔，距离，打字机上的空格”解，用作可数或不可数名词。

• You'd better put as much space as possible between the lines so that explanatory notes can be written there.
  你最好尽量使行距隔得大些，以便能写得下解释性注释。
• There should be five spaces left blank at the beginning of the first line of each paragraph.
  在每段第一行开始应空出五个空格。
• The adverbial phrase “every day” has a space between the two words.
  在副词词组“every day”中，两个词之间有一个空格。
• There is to be a space of four meters distance between two trees.
  两棵树之间有一个四米的间隔。

③space也可作未被占用的或有限的“地方，空处，空位，空间”，用作可数或不可数名词。

• It's usually difficult to find a parking space here on Saturdays.
  礼拜六通常难以在这儿找到一个停车的地方。
• Clear a space on the rostrum for the distinguished guests.
  在主席台上腾出安置贵宾的空间。
• Let's put it in the space between the two shelves.(不可数)
  咱们把它放在两个架子之间的空地上吧。
• Is there enough space in your room for all the furniture?(不可数)
  你房间里有足够的空间放下所有这些家具吗？

④space 有时可指“座位，空位”。

• Luckily, there was an extra space on the bus.
  幸好公共汽车上有一个空位。

⑤space又可表示“一段时间；时期”，仅用单数。

• The President had faced several major political crises within the space of less than a year, which eventually led to his downfall.
  这位总统在不到一年的时间里经历了几次重大的政治危机，从而最终导致了他的下台。

 (2) universe 则指天地万物，包括所有星系、星球及其卫星，通常译作“宇宙”。

• Scientists believe that somewhere in the universe there must be another world like ours.
  科学家们相信在宇宙的某处肯定存在着另外一个与我们的相似的世界。
• Our world is but a very small part of the universe .
  我们的世界仅仅是宇宙的很小的一部分。

 (3) ①room 可作“空间，空地，空位子”解，用作不可数名词，有时可与space 换用。

• Here there is room/space for three more.
  这儿有再容纳三个(人)的空间。
• I don't require a lot of space , but I must have at least room enough for my feet.
  我不要求很多的空间，但我必须有至少能放脚的地方。
• There is room to spare in the car for two more people.
  汽车里还有空，能再容纳两个人。
• They three were moved out to a near-by hotel, to make room /clear a space for more important persons.
  为了给更重要的人物腾出空来，他们三人搬到附近的一家旅馆去了。

②there is room/no room for意思是“有/没有……的余地”。

• There is room for improvement in our work.
  我们的工作还有改进的余地。
• There is no room for error/doubt/argument/bargaining here.
  这儿没有犯错误/怀疑/争论/讨价还价的余地。
