trigger off, set off, spark off 与 touch off 这些短语均可表示“引起、引发、触发(一个行动或事件)”。

 (1) trigger 指突然地引发，常指激烈的行为或事件。

• Do you know what triggered the First World War off ?
  你知道是什么引发了第一次世界大战吗?
• His stupid remarks triggered off a fight in the crowd.
  他的蠢话引发了一场群殴。

 (2) set off可指“(不是出于故意地)引起、引发”。

• Careless handling of international relations can set off a war.
  国际关系的不慎处理会引发战争。

 (3) spark off作“引发，引起”解时，多用于口语。

• Stories about the fall of the government sparked off much of the selling of shares.
  政府垮台的消息引起了股票拋售。
• It would not take more than one careless remark to spark off violence in this angry crowd.
  大家义愤填膺，如稍有点话不投机，暴力事件就会一触即发。

 (4) touch off也可作“触发”解。

• Stupid political action can easily touch off a war.
