区别辨析 unfortunate, unlucky, unhappy, down on (one's) luck, inauspicious 与 out of luck

(1) ①unfortunate意为“不幸的,倒霉的,运气不好的”,较正式,语气也较强。

  • It was unfortunate that he broke his leg while skating.
    他真是倒霉,在滑冰时摔断了腿。
  • Do you know what unfortunate thing happened to that old lady?
    你知道在那位老太太身上发生了什么不幸?
  • It's very unfortunate that he became an orphan after the floods.
    他在洪灾之后成了一名孤儿,非常不幸。

②unfortunate又可作“不成功的,不恰当的,令人遗憾的”解。

  • His unfortunate career seemed doomed from the very beginning.
    他的不成功的职业生涯似乎是从一开始就被注定了的。
  • He was unfortunate in business.
    他在商界是不成功的。
  • His unfortunate remark made her unhappy.
    他的不合时宜的话让她很不高兴。

 (2) unlucky意为“不幸的,不巧的,倒霉的”,与unfortunate相比,语气较随便。

  • By some unlucky chance, the train was late.
    由于一些不凑巧的原因,火车晚点了。
  • I'm unlucky at cards — I've never won even once.
    我打牌时总是不走运——我从未赢过一次。
  • The company was unlucky in having for its manager a man like him.
    公司拥有像他这样的经理确实是够倒霉的。
  • I was unlucky to have missed the train.
    很不幸,我错过了这趟火车。

 (3) unhappy除表示“不愉快,痛苦”外,还作“不幸的,不明智的,不恰当的”解。

  • Investing in that firm was an unhappy venture.
    投资于那家公司是一件不幸的事情。
  • You shouldn't have made such an unhappy remark on such an unhappy occasion.
    在这样的一个不愉快的场合下你不应该说这种不恰当的话。

 (4) down on (one's) luck指“运气不佳,处境艰难”。

  • The teacher is easy on Jane, because Jane has been down on (her) luck lately.
    老师对简很温和,因为她近来运气不佳。
  • He has been down on his luck recently — he has suffered successive losses in business.
    他最近处境艰难——他在生意上遭遇到一连串的损失。

 (5) inauspicious主要用于事物,意为“不吉利的,凶兆的,不利的”。

  • That was an inauspicious day for us — our ship was wrecked in a storm off the coast of Africa.
    那天对我们来说是不吉利的一天——我们的船在非洲外海的暴风雨中撞坏了。

 (6) out of luck用作表语,指“运气不佳”。

  • When we at last reached the railway station, we were out of luck — the train had just gone.
    当我们最终到达火车站时,我们倒霉极了——火车刚刚开走。
