(1) ①varied指“多种多样的，形形色色的”，侧重于变化和差异，后接单数或复数名词。

• She made repeated and varied efforts to bring about a peaceful solution to the problem.
  她不断做出各种努力来寻找能和平解决这个问题的办法。
• Interpretations of this poem are varied .
  这首诗有多种解释。
• He has had a varied training, has held many offices.
  他受过多种培训，干过很多工作。

②varied还表示“变化不定的，变化很多的”。

• He leads/has a varied life.
  他过着变化不定的生活。
• Going through Britain by car, you'll see the most varied country. The scenes change every hour.
  乘车穿过英国你会看到最富变化的乡村，每个小时景色都不同。

 (2) ①various意为“各种不同的，各不相同的，多种多样的”，侧重种类繁多，后接复数名词，有时可与varied换用而差别不大。

• Of all the various ways of cooking eggs, I like boiling best.
  在各种鸡蛋的烹调方法中，我最喜欢煮的。
• Your reasons for not wanting to meet Smith may be many and various/varied , but you must still meet him.
  你不想见史密斯也许有各种理由，但你仍然必须去见他。

②various还表示“很多，好些，好几个”。

• Various people have expressed disagreement with his proposal.
  很多人已表示不同意他的建议。
• I have various letters to write tonight.
  我今晚上有好几封信要写。

 (3) ①different指“不同的，各种不同的”，有时还表示“另一个”。

• But with the Indians the situation is quite different .
  但是对印第安人，情况大不相同。
• Oh! You look quite different from before with your hair cut.
  呦，剪掉头发的你看起来与以前非常不同。
• This is not what I want. I want a different one.
  这不是我想要的，我想要另一个。
• I figure that different folks like different things.
  我认为人们各有所好。

②different其后的介词一般多是from，英美人都可接受，但也有些英国人用to，美国人用than。

• Our house is different from yours in several ways.
  我的房子与你的房子在好几个方面都不同。
• How different life today is than what it was 20 years ago.
  今天的生活与20年前的生活是多么不同啊！
• Our way of doing it is different to yours.
  我们做这件事的方法与你们的是不同的。
• Mary is different from/than/to Jane in many respects, although they are twins.

 (4) differential可作“有区别的，加以区分的，鉴别性的，显示出不同的”解。

• The government has differential taxes for different kinds of people.
  政府针对不同的人收各种不同的税。
• A differential diagnosis distinguishes between two similar diseases.
  鉴别性的诊断能区分出两种类似的疾病。

 (5) ①assorted指“各种各样混在一起的，混杂的”，侧重于种类繁多。

• I took her a box of assorted candies.
  我带给她一盒什锦糖果。

②assorted还表示“(性格、性情) 相称、相配的”。

• That husband and wife are a well-assorted pair.
  那个丈夫和妻子是非常般配的一对。

 (6) divers指“若干个，好几个”，有时也可作“各种各样的，许多不同的”解，侧重于个体间的不同，是旧用法或诙谐用法。

• Divers persons were present, of all stations in life.
  出席者来自社会各阶层各种各样的人。
• He tried divers styles of art in writing.
  写作中他尝试了许多不同的艺术风格。

 (7) diverse意为“多种多样的，形形色色的”。

• The wild life in Africa is extremely diverse .
  非洲的野生动物极其多种多样。
• John and his brother have diverse interests.
  约翰和他的哥哥有各种各样的兴趣。

 (8) diversified意思是“多样化的，多样经营的”。

• We must develop a diversified economy.
  我们必须发展多样化的经济。
