(1) vest in指“(权力、财产等)归属于;(权力)授予、赋予……”。
- Upon the death of the father, the estate vested in his son.
这个父亲一去世,财产就归他的儿子所有了。
(2) be vested in指“(将权力等)交给、赋予(某人)”。
- In the U.S. the power to declare war is vested not in the President, but in the Congress.(或:...the Congress is vested with the power to declare war.)
在美国宣战的权力不属于总统,而在于国会。 - Most of the authority is vested in the board of directors.
大部分权力被交给董事会。
(3) repose in主要用于以下几个意思:
①“把(权力等)授予某人”,是较正式的用语。
- The nation reposes too much power in the President.
这个国家把太多的权力交给了总统。
②“安息,休息”,指死亡或睡眠。有时用于引申及不及物用法,与rest in意思接近。
- He was asleep, reposing/ having reposed his body in an armchair.
他在扶手椅上睡着了。 - The body of the dead leader reposed/rested in the cathedral for the people to pay their respects.
那位去世的领导人的遗体安放在教堂里,供人们瞻仰。
③“(存)在于……”,可用lie in, reside in, rest in代替。
- The chief attractions of this holiday town repose in its peace and fresh air.
这个度假城的主要吸引力在于它的安宁和新鲜空气。 - Her chief charm reposes/resides in her character not in her looks.
她的主要魅力在于她的性格,不在于她的外貌。
④“(把信任等)寄托于……”。
- I have always reposed complete faith in your ability to deal with matters of sudden urgency.
我总是完全相信你处理突发事件的能力。
(4) reside in意为“(权力或财产等)归属于……;在……手中;(存)在于……;居住于……”。
- The highest judicial authority resides in the Supreme Court.
最高司法权归属于最高法院。 - As an actress, her strength resides mainly in her acting, not in her looks.
作为一个女演员,她的实力主要在于她的演技,不在于外貌。 - This family has resided/lived in this village/at 128 Ping'an Street for upwards of 100 years.
这个家族住在这个村子/住在平安大街128号已经100多年了。
(5) rest in与repose in在意思和用法上基本相同:
①“使安息,休息”,可指睡眠或死亡,也有其他译法。
- It was so comfortable resting in the armchair.
在扶手椅上休息是如此舒适。 - May those who died in the fighting of the floods forever rest in peace.
愿那些在抗洪斗争中牺牲的人们永远安息。 - They rested/reposed his body in the churchyard.
他们把他的遗体安放在教堂墓地中。 - Resting his chin in his hands, he looked steadily at her.
他用手托着下巴,直直地凝视着她。
②“……存在是由于……”。
- The trouble rests in the people's dissatisfaction with the government's performance in stimulating economy.(也可用lies in, reposes in, resides in)
麻烦在于人民不满意政府在刺激经济方面的表现。
③“把(权力)授予某人”。
- The nation rests too much power in the President. (也可用reposes in, vests in)
这个国家给了总统太大的权力。
④“把(信任等)寄托于某人”。
- I have always rested complete faith in your ability to deal with matters of sudden urgency.
我总是完全相信你处理突发事件的能力。
(6) rest on/upon指“依靠……;(希望)寄托在……”;rest with意为“在……手中;是……的责任;由……决定;得靠”。
- His decision to sail rested on his belief that the world was round.
他远航的决定建立在他的信念之上,即地球是圆的。 - The realization of the plan rests on your cooperation.
计划的实现取决于你们的合作。 - Power rested with the aristocracy, composed of the nobility and the gentry.
权力掌握在由贵族和绅士阶层组成的贵族阶级手中。 - As a prisoner, his fate rests with the judge.
