(1) vote in/into power意为“选举……执政上台”,in为副词。
- The President has been voted in for the third time running.
这位总统连续第三次当选执政。 - Labor was voted in/into power for a second term of office, though with a greatly reduced number of seats.
虽然其席位大大减少了,但工党又一次被选举上台继续执政。
(2) vote on/upon指“就……投票表决”,on与upon均为介词。put to the vote和take a vote on意思与此相近。
- Now I propose to vote on/upon the plan since we can't agree on it.
既然无法达成一致协议,我建议还是投票表决这项计划吧。 - Have all the matters before us now been voted on ?
摆在我们面前的所有问题都已被投票表决了吗? - Since we can't agree on the matter, I propose to take a vote on it/I put it to the vote.
既然我们无法就这问题达成一致,我建议我们通过投票来表决。
(3) ①vote onto意为“选进(某一委员会等)”,多用被动语态。
- An accountant and an architect were voted onto the committee in the hope that they would contribute their expert knowledge at the planning stage.
一位会计和一位建筑师被选进委员会,以期他们在计划阶段能贡献出他们的专业知识。
②有时也用vote on,这时on为副词。
- He has more experience of fund-raising than anyone, so we'll vote him on for a start.
他比其他任何人都有更多的筹措资金的经验,因此我们将首先把他选进来。
(4) elect (as)意为“选某人为……”,as也可不用。
- Only someone born in the U.S. can be elected (as) President.
只有出生在美国的人才可被选举为总统。 - Dr. John Porter was elected as the 17th president of the Eastern Michigan University.
约翰·波特博士被选举为东密歇根大学的第十七任校长。
(5) elect to指“选某人到(某个职位或进某个机构)”。
- Clinton was elected to the Presidency for a second term of office.
克林顿再次当选为总统,连续执政。 - They unanimously elected him to the Board of Directors.
