[正] The thief admitted (to) stealing.
[注] admit 作及物动词时,其宾语可以是名词,动名词或从句,但不可以用不定式作宾语。当 admit 用作不及物动词时,需加介词 to,再接宾语。

像 admit 这类动词常用在以下两个固定句型中:

主语 + 谓语 + 动名词;
主语 + 谓语 + 宾语 + 不定式。

比较: They admitted him to be mad. 他们承认他是疯了。

类似的的动词还有: advise, allow, consider, forbid, intend, permit, recommend 等。
