有人问到这样一道选择题：

答案是A，为什么？

先谈为什么抽象名词knowledge之前用a。英语语法中有一条规则，即不可数的抽象名词（以及物质名词），如有修饰语，其前即可用不定冠词a，表示“一种”。这里的“a knowledge+修饰语of English”即是一例。再如：

(2)A contagion of fear seems to be spreading all through the city.（修饰语是短语of fear）

(3)He has a keen intelligence .（修饰语是单词keen）

(4)No man engaged in a work he does not like can preserve saving illusions about himself.（修饰语是从句he does not like）

再谈为什么international trade之前应用零冠词（即不用a或the）。简言之，就是因为这两个词代表一个独立的概念。就像是一个词一样。如说the international trade，那就有区别于其它种类贸易的含义了。再试比较：

(6)the hot water（区别于其它种类的水，意即“是热水，不是凉水等”）
