答案是D而不是C，为什么？
这里必须用what。what在此相当于that which，语法上唤作连接代词（或缩合连接代词），可引导名词性从句。此处的what made matters worse是一主语从句，即that which made matters worse,可直译为“把事情弄得更糟的那一种情况”（一般应译作“更糟糕的是”）。这种what更常译作“所……”，如：
