both of them与two of them

有读者问： two of them与both of them有何不同？

two of them指“他们中的两个”，不是指一个，也不是三个四个等。both of them指的是“他们俩”，不是指两个，而是指两个或二者一起。试比较：

(1)Two of them went. 他们中有两个去了。

(2)Both of them went. 他们两个都去了。
