有一读者问： 高二英语课本有一个例句：
(1)Her mother is as well as before, that is to say,not very well.
译文是：她母亲身体和以前一样，也就是说，并不怎么好。既然前面是as well as, 为什么后面又说 not very well 呢？ 此句是否有误？
此句没有错，译文也没有错。句中的as well as 与 not very well 并不矛盾，因为两个well 的意义不同。后一个well 很容易理解，就是“身体好（in good health)”的意思。前一个well 则没有“身体好”的绝对含义，而是指一个人的“身体好坏 (the condition of the body)” 而言的。在英语里（汉语里也是一样），我们习惯上常用big （不用 small）表大小，用long （不用short）表长短，用high （不用low）表高低，用 deep （不用 shallow）表深浅，用old （不用young）表年龄等，例如：
(2)How big is it? （不用 how small）
(3)How old are you? （不用 how young）
在as...as结构中，基本上也是如此，如：
(4)He is as tall as me. （不用 as short as）
高二英语课本中的例句用 as well as 而不用as ill （或sick）as 的原因也在此。顺便提及，表长短、高低、深浅和年龄大小等的名词亦相应为length （不是 shortness）、height （不是 lowness）、depth （不是shallowness）和age （不是youth）等。
