有一读者问： 下面两句中的as从句为何是方式状语：
(1)As a man sows, so he will reap.
(2)As you make your bed, so you must lie in it.
as..., so...是一种很古老的句型。这里用了两个连词as和so，有的语法家将它们称作“双重指示(double demonstrative)”。这一句型本来是用以表示比较的。as意谓“正如”，所以as从句自然是一方式状语从句。这种用法经久不衰，至今仍常见于比较文雅的语体中，如：
(3)As rust eats iron, so care eats the heart.
(4)As the arrow is to the target, so is Marxism-Leninism to the Chinese revolution.
(5)As times change, so should people's ideas. （注意people's ideas之后省去了change。as times change可译作“随着时代的变迁”）
as之前还常用just，以加强语气，如：
(6)Just as unselfishness is the real test of strong affection, so unselfishness ought to be the real test of the very highest kind of art.
但正如一位语法大师所指出的那样，这种句型所表示的比较关系有时则与因果关系混同起来。你所提问的两个句子就是两个比较明显的例证。这两个句子显然不是表示比较，而是表示因果；而其中的as从句显然也不是表示方式而是表示原因了。
但请注意：用as...so...句型表示因果的现象已属古旧，在当代英语中已很少见了。
