有一读者来信问到nor的用法。他先说有这样一句话：
(1)No one who has never been placed in a like position can understand my feeling at this hour, nor the oppressive sadness I felt at this parting.
接着说一般nor引导的句子是助动词或情态动词提前，于是问道：这里的nor是否属于特殊情况？ 它是连词还是副词？
一般说来，nor有下列三种用法：
1. 与neither一起构成关联连词，例如：
(2)He can neither sing nor dance.
(3)Neither the train nor the bus will get us there on time.
2. 作为连词与not, no等否定词连用，上述句（1）中的nor即属于这种用法，与no连用，与not连用的实例如：
(4)Not a man, nor a woman, is to be seen. （注意nor前有逗号）
这里的nor在当今英语里往往被代之以or，如上述句（4）即可改作：
(5)Not a man or a woman is to be seen. （注意or之前无逗号）
但nor的语气显得较or要重，如：
(6)I recommend that you have nothing further to do with this person nor with these arms transfers.
请注意：在以上两种用法中，nor皆可接连使用，实例如：
(7)Strangely, neither Betty nor Bob nor Juan saw what had happend.
(8)Meanie was not to be found not that day, nor the next day, nor the day after that.
3. 作为副词引导倒装句，实例如：
(9)I could not understand a word they said, nor could they understand me.
注意上述句（2）和句（3）皆可将nor改用作副词，引导一倒装句，如句（2）即可改为：
(10)He cannot sing, nor can he dance.
一般语法书和词典都将这里的nor看做连词，其实将这里的nor（以及neither）看作副词似乎更为合理，有的新近出版的英国词典就是这样认为的。我们这样看的理由有二： 一是应将这种nor （以及neither）和副词never等视作一类，而nor之可以引导倒装句，正如never可引导倒装句一样：
(11)Never did he speak about his own merits.
二是这种nor之前可以有连词and（以及but），实例如：
(12)I could not afford to eat in restaurants and nor could anyone I knew.
如果这里的nor是一连词，它之前怎能再用一个连词呢。
除上述所列的一般用法外，副词nor还有两种较为特殊的用法：
1. 有时可以用在肯定结构之后，实例如：
(13)The tale is long, nor have I heard it out.
2. 主要在英国，nor还可以在下面一类的句子中，代替neither:
(14)— I've never been to Iceland.
— Nor have I.
但回答中的主语亦可指对方而说：
— Nor you have.
这时nor倒像是副词so的反义词了。
