were cave hunting 的意思显然是“在狩猎洞穴中的动物”。其结构倒很有趣。在英语构词法中，cave hunt 属于合成类（composition)，是一由“名词+动词”构成的动词。这种动词常见的有，bootlick（奉承），foxhunt（猎狐），manhandle（用人力搬、拖等；粗暴对待），sunbathe（行日光浴），typewrite（打字），watermark（打水印）等。有趣的是这种动词构成法，和许多构词法一样，也可以活用，上述句（1）中的 cave hunt 即是活用的一例。英国著名诗人拜伦（Lord Byron, 1788—1824）曾写有：
