Derelict 是本周《经济学人》（2025年12月6日刊）标题为“China’s unlikely new entertainment capital”一文中出现的一个单词：
Jumei Film Base, one of the largest studios, was built in 2023 in a derelict shopping centre on the outskirts of the city.
从词源上来看， derelict 一词源自拉丁语 dereliquere （放弃、抛弃、遗弃），由其过去分词 derelictus （被遗弃的、孤寂的）于17世纪40年代进入英语而来，起初即用来表示“被抛弃的、被遗弃的、废弃的、弃置的”，侧重指被所有权人或占有人遗弃的（abandoned especially by the owner or occupant）。比如：
- 一艘在公海上被遗弃的船
a derelict ship on the high seas
由于东西一旦被人遗弃，往往就会因为年久失修而破败不堪。于是从这个概念出发， derelict 便被用来引申指“破败的、破旧的、荒废的、年久失修的”，侧重指土地、建筑物等因长期闲置和疏于维护而状况非常糟糕（in a very poor condition as a result of disuse and neglect）。比如：
- 荒废的土地
derelict land - 一栋三层楼的破败空屋
a three-story derelict house
进而 derelict 还在美式英语中拓展指“玩忽职守的、不负责的、疏忽的”，也就是未能履行应尽的职责的（failing to do what should be done）。比如：
- 他玩忽职守
derelict in his duty - 不负责任的行为
derelict behaviour
用作名词时， derelict 相应表示“被抛弃的东西、遗弃物”，特别是“漂流海上的弃船”以及“社会弃儿、无家可归者、露宿街头者”，后者常作正式用语使用，较中性词 homeless 而言更侧重指失去家庭或社会纽带，如同废弃物那般被遗忘的人。比如：
- 流落街头的无家可归者
derelicts living on the streets
那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：聚美电影基地作为最大的影视基地之一，于2023年在市郊的一座废弃购物中心内建成。
