yellow用于press，journal，journalism，journalist，newspaper，editor等词前面通常译作“黄色（的）”，但yellow的涵义跟汉语“黄色新闻”、“黄色歌曲”等表达方式里的“黄色”的涵义不同。

a five-year-old boy，a twenty-year-old school等比a five-years-old boy，a twenty-years-old school等普通。

Yankee在英国和欧洲指“美国人”，在美国通常指New England人。

X-ray（爱克斯光）原来不是物质名词，所以原来不说The doctor is examining his lungs by means of X-ray。

He is wrong to think so不及He is wrong in thinking so普通。

a writing用来指“一篇文章”或“一本著作”很不普通，但往往指“一个文件”。

在文章里用the writer或the presnet writer指自己不很自然，在信函里更不自然。

He wrote to her in London和He wrote to her from London意思不同。第一句里的in London修饰her。

注意He has a knife wound in the leg和There are wounds in his forehead and face里用in，不用on。
