深入解读
说起 huddle 一词来，小站（微信公众号：田间小站）的老铁们多半很容易联想起之前推送过的结尾相同的 muddle, meddle, peddle, fiddle, straddle 等来。除此之外，小站上个月推送的 hurdle 也与之十分形似。
具体来说， huddle 可能源自低地德语 hudern （遮盖、遮蔽，常指母鸡将小鸡们保护在羽翼下），16世纪70年代进入英语后开始用来形容人们或动物们通常因寒冷或恐惧而“聚在一起、挤成一团”，以及指单个人通常因寒冷或恐惧而“蜷缩、缩成一团（up）”“紧裹（in）”或“紧紧依偎（against）”，比如：
- 我们是患难朋友。我们曾挤在一块取暖。
We are companions in adversity. We once huddled together for warmth. - 她蜷缩在床上，温暖又舒适，享受着暴风雨前的宁静。
She huddled (up) in bed, all snug and warm, and enjoyed the lull before the storm.
这个概念用作名词时，则相应表示“挤在一起的人、物品、建筑等”，尤指杂乱地挤在一起，比如：
- 他们横七竖八地挤作一团躺在那里，大口喘着气。
They lay there: a huddle of bodies, gasping for air.
值得注意的是，在美式橄榄球等运动中， huddle 还被用来表示“队员靠拢”，即队员临赛前在对阵争球线后面集体围成一圈听取战术指示。这样不仅可以防止对手听到教练的言语指示，也可以防止对手看见教练的肢体语言。
与这种背对着对手聚在一起磋商战术相似的是， huddle 也可以用来作动词表示“私下开会、暗中碰头”以及作名词表示“私下的碰头会、秘密的商量”，比如：
