Perpetrator 是本周《经济学人》（2025年8月9日刊）标题为“Israel on trial: can the country police its own war crimes?”一文中出现的一个单词：

In most of these cases the perpetrators would have been acting against orders.

从拼写上来看，不难发现 perpetrator 的末尾有个表示“人”的名词后缀 -or ，将其去掉就会得到动词 perpetrate 。

从词源上来看，动词 perpetrate 源自于拉丁语 perpetrare （执行，完成）的过去分词 perpetratus ，最早于16世纪40年代进入英语，即用来表示“犯、做、干”罪、错事、坏事等，常作正式用语使用，侧重指执行或实施有害、非法或不道德的行为，往往带有强烈的负面评价和谴责意味。比如：

• 犯下暴行
  perpetrate atrocities
• 搞恶作剧
  perpetrate practical jokes
• 对一些行人的戏弄
  a hoax perpetrated on some pedestrian

而与之相关的 perpetrator 则相应表示“犯罪者、作恶者、行凶者、施害者”，与熟词 victim （受害者）相对。比如：

• 有组织大屠杀的实施者
  the perpetrators of the organized massacre

那么回到上面《经济学人》的句子，其句意也就是说：在大多数此类情况下，肇事者应是违反了命令行事。
