可以说He is competent to teach grammar。不可说He is so competent as to teach grammar。

competency不及competence普通。

competence（能力）后面接不定式，如his competence to conduct the school。

关于compensate和compensate for的用法，下面几点该注意：

说画圆形用的“两脚规”用compass, compasses或pair of compasses都可以。

not to be compared with（或to）作“比不上…的”解，用with或to都可以。

comparatively few和comparatively rich和comparatively well等表达方式里的few, rich, well等词不可改作fewer, richer, better等。

company在用作“客人（们）”解的时候前面不用a或the，如We had company at dinner和He always has company on Saturday evenings.

不论说私人之间的“公约”或国家或团体之间的“公约”，现在用pact比用compact普通。

the community指“大众”，也就是统指“社会”，注意前面有the。society前面没有the。

communication在商业信函和公文里作“信函”解。

communicate with往往作“写信给…”解，不一定指“跟…互相通信”。
