automatic一般译作“自动的”，当然不错，但有被误解的可能。

auto是automobile的简写形式，是美国英语，现在几乎不用。

说“主管人员”或“当局者”，习惯用复数形式authorities，前面有the，如the authorities和the local authorities。

author是“著作者”，一篇文章或一本书的作者是author。但在单独用时，总指文学家，就如汉语“作家”这名称。

在英语里“姑母”、“姨母”、“伯母”、“婶婶”和“舅母”都叫aunt。

除了for aught I know（据我所知道）这一表达方式以外，aught现在不通用。

严格地说，audience是“听众”，不是“观众”，跟它相当的指“观众”的词是没有的。

sell by auction（拍卖）是英国英语，sell at auction是美国英语。

The scenery attracted her to loiter on the way里的attracted用得不对，该改作tempted。

说“对于…的态度”，attitude后面接towards或to，如my attitude towards（或to）him和a respectful attitude towards（或to）criticism。

attire统指“衣服”，不指“一件衣服”。现在不普通。

attic是“顶楼”，在英国通常是穷人住的。
