again and again和time and again是“屡次地”或“频繁地”，now and again是“有时”或“偶尔”，only now and again是“难得地”。

在英国通常用afterwards，在美国两种形式都普通。

afternoon（下午）是after和noon两个词合成的名词，“在下午”该说in the afternoon或during the afternoon。

从某时说到多少时间以后，不该用after，该用in。

much afraid, very much afraid和very afraid都作“很怕”解。但very afraid不妥，因为afraid是表语形容词。

afford（给）可以带有双宾语。

He answered（或replied）in the affirmative里的in the affirmative不可改作affirmatively。

affectionate和dear不同，affectionate是“爱的”，dear是“被爱的”，如He is affectionate to me是“他爱我”

注意下面各句都有a（或an）：

affectation（假装、装模作样）和affection（爱好）现在截然不同，不可通用。

affect作“发生影响于…”解，这影响也许是好的，也许是不好的，但往往指不好的。

affair有时用作love-affair解。例如：He has had an affair with the girl.
