容易误译的英语

The grey mare is the better horse是谚语，意为“妻子胜过丈夫”。

the ins and the outs意为“执政党和在野党”，应将它与the ins and outs（“曲折”）区别开来。

the King's English（也作the king's English）意为“纯正［标准，规范］英语”，女王在位时则称the Queen's English（也作the queen's English）。

the last...与不定式连用，意为“绝不”。

the lion's share 意为“大部分”、“最好的部分”。

the man in [on] the street 意为“普通人”、“一般人”。其中的介词，英式英语用in，美式英语用on。

本例的the new school不是“新学校”，而是“新式派”之意，它与the old school（“保守派”，“传统派”，“守旧派”）相对。

the Old Lady of [in] Threadneedle Street是Bank of England（“英格兰银行”）的别称。此银行位于伦敦老城区中心的Threadneedle Street（“针线街”）上，故有此别称。
