容易误译的英语

not...until 意为“直到……才……”、“在……以前不……”。句中的until也可用till代替，但当它在句首时，一般都用until而不用till。口语中，英国人多用till，美国人则多用until。

not until意为“直到”。本例实际上等于She did not study abroad until she got married（见not...until）。

not so dusty（英国俚语）意为“不错”、“还好”。它与fairly good同义。

not hay（美国俚语）意为“为数不小的一笔钱”。

由于英国口语not half有“非常”、“很大程度上”等含义，因而很容易将习语not half bad理解为“极坏”、“非常坏”。

但在英国口语中，它却当反语用，意为“很”、“非常”、“十分”（等于very, very much）等。

not give one the time of day（美国口语）意为“不理睬某人”。

not begin to（口语）意为“根本不能……”、“一点也不会……”。

若because前无逗号，not...because意为“并非因为……而……”。

not a few看似否定语，实为肯定语，其意为“不少的”、“许多的”，只能用于可数名词。它与quite a few, a good few同义。

not a bit 意为“一点也不”、“毫不”。如将句子改成The child is not a little sleepy才是“这孩子很想睡觉”。

本例的north（副词）意为“从北方吹来”。
