容易误译的英语

本例的shanghai（小写）不是中国的城市名“上海”，而是一个及物动词，意为“用诱骗的手段迫使某人做某事”。

set the Thames [world] on fire（英国俗语）意为“作惊人之举”，一般用于否定句。

set one's cap at 或set one's cap for是口语，意为“（女子）企图赢得（男子的）爱情”。

本例是省略句，省略了主语it，完整句应是It serves her right。

send one to Coventry意为“拒［断］绝与某人交往”。

sell off意为“廉价出售（存货）”。sell out 才是“售空”、“售完”。

see with half an eye 意为“一看即知”、“一目了然”。

see the lions意为“游览名胜”。而show one the lions则是“带领某人游览名胜”。

see the elephant（美国俚语）意为“开眼界”、“见世面”、“长世故”。

see...out意为“把……进行到底”、“完成”。

see beyond one's nose意为“有远见”。也可将此习语写成see beyond the end of one's nose。

see eye to eye意为“看法［意见］完全一致”。“送秋波”是make eyes at。
