容易误译的英语

本例的funeral（名词，口语）意为“（与个人相关的）倒霉事，麻烦事”。

the answer is a lemon（口语）意为“无法理解［回答］”、“无必要回答”。

The Arabian Nights' Entertainments, 亦作The Arabian Nights或A Thousand and One Nights，是书名。

the Big Apple 是纽约市（New York City）的别称。

the Battery（也称Battery Park）意为“炮台公园”，位于美国纽约市曼哈顿岛南端，园内置有美国革命时期的海岸大炮。

本例的the big house [the Big House] 是美国俚语，意为“联邦监狱”或“州监狱”。

此处的the Boxers意为“义和团”。若当“拳击手”解时不可能用首字母大写。

the birds and (the) bees（口语）意为“两性关系的基本知识”、“性教育的基本知识”。

the dead of night是意为“半夜”、“深夜”。

The goose hangs high是美国口语，意为“形势大好”、“前途光明”、“前景美好”。hang在这里是不及物动词，high是副词。

the gift of gab（口语）意为“口才”、“能说会道”。the gift of the gab为英式英语。

the green-eyed monster意为“妒忌”。它与jealousy（名词）同义。
