容易误译的英语

虽然down当副词时有“由北向南”之义，但在本例中down只是构成down-to-earth这个词的一部分。down-to-earth（形容词）意为“现［务，朴］实的”、“实际的”。

down under（口语）意为“在澳大利亚或新西兰”。

down to date 意为“最新式的”、“现代的”。有趣的是，up（“向上”）与down（“向下”）本是互为反义，但各自加上to date后却成了同义语。

down in the mouth [dumps]（口语）意为“沮丧的”、“颓丧的”、“气馁的”。

原文：I bought a new down jacket for the trip.
错译：我为这次旅行买了一件新的低领夹克。

原文：What the reporters got from him was just political doublespeak.
错译：记者从他那里所得到的，都是些政治双人对话。

原文：Don't make yourself a mouse, or the cat will eat you.
错译：不要把自己变得胆小如鼠，否则会被猫吃掉。

原文：The fiend double-crossed the rest of the gang and disappeared with all the money.
错译：那个恶魔在其他同伙面前画了两个十字，然后携款潜逃了。

［例句］　Don't get yourself burnt out.
［误译］　勿引火烧身。

［例句］　I was dog-tired so went to bed early yesterday evening.
［误译］　我昨晚累得像只狗，所以很早就睡了。
